Mr. J.A. Altman, 76, of Campbell Street, Varnville, entered into eternal rest Thursday, August 8, 2013 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Reba Wooten Altman.
Funeral services will be held 5 pm, Monday, August 12, 2013 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel. Interment will follow in Gooding Cemetery.
Mr. Altman was born August 13, 1936 in Hampton County and was a son of the late Percy Altman and Patty Harriott Altman. He served his country in the United States Coast Guard. He worked for many years for Fred Tuten Tree Company and the Highway Department. He was a member of Huggin Oak Church. He loved fishing and telling jokes but will especially be remembered for the love he had for his family.
Surviving are: his children, Heyward Lee Smitty Smith, Jr. and his wife Sonja of Hampton, Allen Keith Smith and his wife Kathy of Varnville, Gregory Mark Smith and his wife Rhonda of Nixville, Bryan Lamar Smith of Varnville; Shannon Renee Moseley and her husband Jimmy of Varnville, and Patty Smith of Varnville; 17 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, J.A. Altman, Jr.
