Icey Jones Carter

October 29, 1936 — March 20, 2016

Mrs. Icey Jones Carter, age 79, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2016, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.   She was preceded in death by her husband, the light and love of her life for sixty-one years, in February, Mr. Thomas Lee Carter.

Funeral services will be conducted 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, March 23, 2016, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.  The Reverend Godfrey Ritter and The Reverend Dr. Zane Brown officiating.  Interment will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.

Born October 29, 1936, in Colleton County, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Godley Leon Jones and the late Lottie Humphries Jones.

She was raised to know and love the Lord in her family church, Zion Baptist Church, and was faithful alongside her husband at North Walterboro Baptist Church.  She was a longtime member and icon at the Colleton Saddle Club. Icey dearly loved her family, always centering her daily life around their needs, being a dedicated housewife and mother.   She enjoyed shrimping, riding horses, crocheting, and even at one point in her life did a great deal of woodworking.   She enjoyed Quinton Mills Music and was a true Nascar Motor Sports fan.

Surviving are: two children, Debbie Carter Stillion and her husband Douglas of Walterboro and Inga Carter Smoak of Round O; and seven sisters, Orene Hudson of Walterboro, Irene Carroll and her husband Jimmy of Walterboro, Suzanne Keller of Lodge, Carolyn Thompson and her husband Buddy of Walterboro, Loretta Atkinson and her husband J.T. of Barnwell, Gloria Copeland and her husband Robert of Ehrhardt and Katie Jerkins and her husband Jessie of Walterboro.  There are four grandchildren, Christy Thompson and her husband Randall of Walterboro, Angie Cummings of Walterboro, Keeley Chapman and her husband Bo of Walterboro, and Thomas Craven of Walterboro; four great grandchildren, Cole Cummings, Michael Chapman, Priscilla Chapman, and “Lil” Randall Thompson; and seven step-grandchildren, Paul, Jayme, Angie, Lisa, Michelle, Reggie, and Holdan.  She was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Blaine “Tony” Carter in 1996; a son-in-law, Reggie Smoak, Sr.; and a sister, Ella Mae Rushton.
