Hugh "Buck" Hamilton Hoats, 95, of Walnut Heights Road, Dorchester SC, formerly of Colleton County went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 13, 2011. Mr. Hoats died peacefully at his home. He will be missed by all who knew him. He never met a stranger and made all welcome who came to any event he was involved with. He worked for many years until retirement in the garment industry of Colleton County and for a time owned the General Store at Ashepoo. During World War II, Hugh worked as a fireman at the Walterboro Air Base. He raised his family in the "Possum Corner" area of Colleton County. After retirement, "Mr. Hugh" as he was known by many, began square dancing in 1983 and found the passion of his life. In 1984 he introduced his granddaughter Heather into the square dance world to be his dance partner. He and Heather travelled all around the state dancing for many years together. He was a member of numerous square dancing clubs around the lowcountry which included Dorchester Ramblers, Stallsville Strutters, Firehouse Squares, Frontier Twirlers, and Berkeley Squares. He was a Square Angel to many other square dance clubs. He was member of the Herb Franklin Dancers Exhibition Team. For 15 years "Mr. Hugh" held a Square Dance Party at his home attended by hundreds from around South Carolina and surrounding states. In 2007 at the South Carolina Square and Round Dance Federation in Myrtle Beach, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. As his sight and hearing began to fade, Mr. Hugh stopped dancing but still loved to go to enjoy the fellowship.

Hugh was born September 27, 1916, in Mashawville, SC to Hugh Hamilton Hoats, Sr. and Gillie Augusta Davis. He attended Colleton County Schools and was a member of First Baptist Church of Harleyville where he was recognized as a Deacon Emeritus. He was the widower of Daisy Johnson Hoats who
