Helena Godley

May 28, 1927 — August 19, 2012

Mrs. Helena Kinard Godley, 85, of 2789 Moselle Road, Islandton, entered into her eternal rest Sunday afternoon, August 19, 2012, surrounded by her family at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. She was the wife of the late Mr. Edward Kenneth Godley who died in 1992.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, August 22, 2012, from Adnah United Methodist Church, Adnah Church Road, Islandton, with Pastor Fred Davis and The Reverend Michael Coxwell officiating. Interment will follow in the Churchyard.

Mrs. Godley was born May 28, 1927, a native of Colleton County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Clinton Kinard and the late Thelma Martin Kinard. She was the retired bookkeeper and was a significant part of the operations of her late husband's business, Kenneth Godley and Son Farms of Islandton, which she continued to stay committed to following his death. She was a lifelong member of Adnah United Methodist Church in Islandton where she was active in the church's work and during her lifetime had served on numerous committees within the church. She formerly served on the Colleton County Farm Bureau Board, and was a member of the Soil Conservation Board, South Carolina Tax Payers Association, and the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Health to You group at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. Helena loved the outdoors, from polling a small boat through the Salkehatchie River to spending time on her boat at Edisto Beach where she spent a great deal of time at her beach house; fishing was her greatest pastime. She was also very dedicated to her family, always centering her life around the needs of her family whom she loved dearly.

Surviving are: a son, David Lamar Godley and his wife Gloria of Islandton; and a daughter, Nancy Godley Peeler of Islandton. There are four grandchildren, Donna Godley Coxwell and her husband Michael of Beaufort, Jeff Godley of Islandton, Jason Wesley Peeler of Islandton, and Emily Elizabeth Peeler of Islandton as well as four great grandchildren, Courtney Elizabeth Coxwell, Caroline Frances Coxwell, Catherine Grace Coxwell, and Elizabeth Grace Peeler that also survive. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gerald Wayne Peeler; and two brothers, Clyde Wesley Kinard and Rufus Clinton Kinard.

Flowers will be accepted, or for those who wish, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions may be directed in her memory to: Adnah United Methodist Church, Cemetery Fund, care of Jackie Smoak, 124 Hiers Corner Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.

The family will be at the home of Nancy Godley Peeler, 3375 Forks Road, Islandton.
