Harriett Hoff Wolff

February 8, 1920 — February 10, 2015

Harriett Effie Wolff passed into the arms of the Lord on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 just two days after celebrating her 95th birthday. Harriett was born in Cottageville, SC, to parents John Franklin and Harriett Metts Hoff. She attended high school until 1937 when she married Victor. A Wolff on July 3, 1937 where he worked as an Ordnanceman for the Navy in Charleston. Victor and Harriett moved to New Jersey in 1944 where he worked at the Ordnance Depot in Earle, NJ until his retirement on December 31, 1973 after 35 years of service. Harriett held several jobs in the garment industry before accepting a secretarial position in civil service in 1965 with the Signal Corps in Ft. Monmouth, NJ. Following the transfer of the Signal Corps in Ft. Monmouth to Ft. Gordon, GA Harriett and Victor relocated to Martinez, GA in 1975 where she retired as an Editorial Assistant in 1982 after 17 years of service.

Harriett and Victor enjoyed traveling through the Southeast with their camping club. They were married for 65 years before he passed away in 2002. Harriett was also an accomplished crafts maker creating and painting ceramic figures for family and friends. She was a longstanding member of Warren Baptist Church where she actively participated in senior group activities and outings. She was a regular church-goer and an avid reader of the Bible, drawing strength and compassion from her faith in God. Harriett never knew an enemy. Friends and family members were always welcome in her home where they were always greeted with a ready smile and her lively sense of humor. She was an avid competitor who enjoyed playing cards and games. She was also considered the matriarch of her family, warmly welcoming guests at their annual family reunions and leading the prayers at their Thanksgiving dinners. When her health began to fail, Harriett moved into a retirement home in Houston, TX in 2013 and later into a nursing home in 2014 where she lived until she passed away. She will be sorely missed by members of her family and the many friends she made during her lifetime.

Harriett was preceded in death by her loving husband Victor Wolff, and by her eight siblings, Samuel Hoff, Winnie Dillard, Hugo Hoff, Mendel Hoff, Thomas Hoff, Ina Mae Jordan, Ruby Williamson and Mary Hoff. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara and husband Sam Guy in Houston, TX; her son Ronald Wolff in Panama City Beach, FL; and her five grandchildren, Lisa Gallagher, Rachel Guy, Cory Wolff, Kristi Wolff and Alexandra Wolff, all of whom she loved dearly.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 o’clock Monday morning, February 16, 2015, at the Jordan family plot in Cottageville, a short distance from the small house where she was born on February 8, 1920. The service will be conducted by Harriett’s nephew, Rev. Larry Wolff from Pinehurst, NC.
