Harold Schreckengast

October 8, 1923 — February 5, 2015


Former Beaufort resident Harold E. Schreckengast, 91, passed away on February 5, 2015 and is now with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Harold was born on October 8, 1923. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and two years later was married to Marianne Banzhaf. Harold served with the United States Marines as a medic on Tarawa during World War II, and during the Korean War tended to the returning of wounded soldiers. He served aboard a mine sweeper off the Cuban coast during the Cuban Missile Crisis, was stationed in Antarctica and later was sent to the Republic of Vietnam to serve with the 3rd battalion, 6th Marine Division, “C” company of the United States Marine Corps. Throughout his 23 years of service, Mr. Schreckengast earned several medals, including five Good Conduct medals, the American Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, the Navy Presidential Unit citation, the Antarctica Service Ribbon, the Republic of Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, and the World War II Victory Medal. He also received five honorable discharges during his time in the service of our country. Along with providing for his family and serving our country, Mr. Schreckengast was also noted for his outstanding desire to serve God.

Mr. Schreckengast is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Marianne Bazhaf Schreckengast; and his six children, Jane Emminger, John Schreckengast, Joan Dickinson, Jerry Schreckengast, Jean Tokunaga, and Judy Jacobs. He has 18 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and many friends throughout the Low Country.

For those who knew Harold it was obvious that he had a friendly demeanor and a great sense of humor. Although he will be missed for so many reasons, thank you, Harold, for being an example for us all.

A memorial service for Mr. Schreckengast will be held at 11:30 am, Monday, February 9, 2015 at Victory Baptist Church in Beaufort, SC. His interment will follow at 1 pm, at Beaufort National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Harold Schreckengast Memorial Fund at Victory Baptist Church, 378 Parris Island Gateway, Beaufort, South Carolina 29906.
