Mr. Harold Berkeley Crosby, 81, of 113 Pine Street, Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Tuesday evening, May 5, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at his residence under the care of Hospice Care of South Carolina.



Funeral services will be conducted 4 oclock Saturday afternoon, May 9, 2009, from Bethel United Methodist Church, 16147 Lowountry Highway, Ruffin with The Reverend James Grubb, The Reverend Kenneth Bailey, and Pastor Dave Bryan officiating. Interment will follow in the churchyard.



Mr. Crosby was born January 26, 1928, in Charleston and was a son of the late Henry Blake Crosby and the late Ida Martha Breland Crosby. He served his country faithfully in the United States Navy with the Seabees and was retired heavy equipment mechanic having retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he was affectionately known by co-workers and friends as Handsome Harold. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church " Ruffin charge and was also a member of the American Legion. He will be remembered for his former love of fishing the Salkahatchie Swamp of Colleton County, hunting, tending to his garden, and sharing the harvest of his crops with those he loved.



Surviving are: his wife of forty-seven years, Mrs. Nina Neighbors Gooding Crosby; four children, John Allan Gooding and his wife June of Green Pond, Ida Lee Crosby Carter and her husband Billy of Ridgeville, Edward Berkeley Bert Crosby and his wife Carol of Irmo, Jay Daniel Crosby and his friend Merritt Mchaffie of Columbia; a brother, Edgar Salters and his wife Nancy of Hanahan, and three sisters, Doris Crosby Reeves and her husband Jack of Charleston, Mary Francis Crosby Taylor of Orangeburg, and Janie Louise Crosby of Ruffin. There are six grandchildren, Andrea Gooding, Zachary Gooding, Sarah Jane Carter, Danny Carter, Berkeley Crosby and Harris Crosby as well as numerous and countless beloved friends and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Lee Crosby.



Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorials be directed in his memory to the following: Hospice Care of South Carolina, 134 Bells Highway, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to, Bethel United Methodist Church, care of Carolyn Breland, 573 Spencer Drive, Ruffin, South Carolina 29475; or to: Shepherds Care Respite Center, care of Virginia Bullard, 106 May Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
