Goldie Colson

Mrs. Goldie Caroline Ferguson Surofchek Colson, 99, of Cottageville, entered into eternal rest Friday, November 11, 2016 at the Life Care Center of Charleston.  She was first married to the late Steven Surofcheck and was the widow of Jefferies Colson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, November 13, 2016 at Maple Cane Baptist Church, 21287 Augusta Highway, Cottageville.  Interment will follow in Meeting House Cemetery, Cottageville.  The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 pm until the hour of service at the church.

Born January 19, 1917 in Cottageville she was a daughter of the late Bennie C. Ferguson and Elizabeth Weeks Ferguson.  She had worked in the carpenter shop at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, where she met her first husband, Steven, who was a Ship’s Cook First Class aboard the USS Grunion SS-216 which was lost at sea in 1942.  At the time of her death, she was the last surviving widow of the USS Grunion.  She then married her second husband, Jefferies, in 1949.  She has also worked as a seamstress at the Walterboro Dress Plant and was a retired inspector for J.P. Stevens.

She was a lifetime and oldest member of Maple Cane Baptist Church, where she was a youth leader and active with the WMU.  She was a member of the Maple Cane Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and was instrumental in building the first fire department at Maple Cane.  Mrs. Goldie was known and loved by everyone and will always be remembered for the love she had for her family, her church, and her friends.

Surviving are: her children, Patsy S. Stokes of Cottageville and Allen Colson, Sr. and his wife Kay of Walterboro; sister, Annabelle Arnold of Cottageville; brothers, John Ferguson and Ralph Ferguson, both of Cottageville; 12 grandchildren, Teresa S. Baker (Mark), Georgia Drawdy (Bennie), Al Colson (Kim), Sonya Hickman (Kenny), and Amanda Smuz (Tony); 15 great grandchildren, Courtney B. Askins (Philip), M. Mikell Baker, P. Emmaline Baker, Autumn Stroble (J.C.), Ashli Drawdy (Dalton), Travis Drawdy (Crystal), Wyatt Colson, Donovan Hill, Sharon Bowers, David Smuz, and Christina Smuz; 8 great great grandchildren, Jake Askins, Graycen Porter, Braxton Stroble, Willow Kaye Stroble, Colton Stroble, Hunter Drawdy, Emma Faith Drawdy, and Ethan Drawdy; and many nieces and nephews, including two nieces she was especially close to, Pearl Ferguson and Charlotte Brinson.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Billie Currie; grandson, Marion W. “Bubba” Stokes and his wife Kaye; granddaughter, Mary Stokes; and brothers, A.B. Ferguson and Reuben Ferguson.
