Mrs. Gladys Hubbard Canaday, 80, of Jefferies Highway, Walterboro, entered into rest Friday afternoon, March 8, 2013, at her residence. She was the loving wife of the late Mr. Furman David Canaday who died in 1994.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 oclock Monday afternoon, March 11, 2013, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 7345 Jefferies Highway, Walterboro with The Reverend David Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot in the churchyard.
A native of Beaufort, South Carolina, she had lived for the past seventy years in Walterboro. Born March 19, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Perry Hubbard and the late Ola Mae Wells Hubbard. She was a beloved icon in the Colleton County School District. During the earlier years of her career, she served as a substitute teacher before assuming a secretarial position at Colleton Middle School and eventually retiring from Ruffin High School. She was an active member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she was the retired church clerk with fifty years of service. Also at her church among being active in many aspects of the churchs work, she for many years was a Sunday School teacher, director of the churchs annual Vacation Bible School, and also a member of the Womens Missionary Union. Gladys was a loving and kind-spirited Christian woman who was loved by all. She was an accomplished artist, having been awarded with several awards for her work and talent. She lived for her yards and tended to her gardens in all seasons of the year and also loved her animals dearly.
Surviving are: two daughters, Shirley Canaday Campbell and her husband Chief Master Sergeant Larry S. Campbell (Ret.) of Summerville and Joyce Canaday Breland and her husband Rodney C. Breland of Greenville. There are four grandchildren, Jeffrey Peeler of Columbia, Dr. Melanie Peeler of Columbia, Cyd Brown and her husband Dr. Joseph Brown of Greenville, and Samuel Breland of Greenville; one great grandchild, Wren Brown and one expected in June, Waylon Brooks Breland; as well as three first cousins, Susan W. Evans, Ivan M. Wells and Ellen W. Chambers.
