Biography

Mr. George B. Bassett, Jr., 82, of Fairfax, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, November 05, 2014 at Allendale County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock, Friday, November 7, 2014 at St. Johns Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Born April 29, 1932 in Bamberg County, he was a son of the late George B. Bassett, Sr. and Pearl O'Quinn Bassett Ayer. He retired from the Savannah River Site as a Reactor Supervisor, where he had worked for 35 years. After his retirement, he became a Certified Electrician and worked as an electrician for 10 years. He also owned and operated Bassett Nursery. He was a member of St. Johns Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Choir, former Deacon, Brotherhood Director, and Sunday School Director, and served in many other aspects of the church. He was a member of the Buford Masonic Lodge in Farifax. He also enjoyed farming.

Surviving are: his wife of 17 years, Laurette Meeks Bassett of Fairfax; daughters, Lisa B. Metzger and her husband Ted of Fairfax and Lynn B. Sox and her husband Vernon of Aiken; stepchildren, Clyde Ayer of Ehrhardt, Charles Ayer of Ehrhardt and Jane Campbell and her husband Willie of Ehrhardt; sister, Sarah Winn and her husband John of Ehrhardt; and grandchildren, Allison Metzger and T.J. Metzger. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Cone Bassett.
