George Carden

d. January 6, 2011

Senior Chief George Michael Carden, United States Navy (Ret.), affectionately known by many as Jake, age 73, of 3784 Prices Bridge Road, Walterboro, entered into his state of eternal rest Thursday evening, January 6, 2011, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Aline Marie Blades Carden.

A gathering of remembrance will be held 6 oclock Monday evening, January 10, 2011, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro conducted by Mrs. Cathy Nelson.

The family will receive friends following the ceremony in the Harbiston Stateroom of the funeral home until 8 oclock that evening.

Senior Chief Carden was born August 13, 1937, in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, and was a son of the late Andrew J. Carden and the late Margaret Buddy Carden. He served his country faithfully in the United States Navy, having been enlisted for twenty-four years in active service and at the time of his retirement had achieved the rank of Senior Chief. While in service, he saw action aboard submarine vessels during the Vietnam Era and Korean Conflict. He worked with the Department of the Navy to develop the Navy Alcohol Safety Action Program. He was raised as a Roman Catholic, having been a former member of Saint Anthonys Roman Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus; and recently changed his membership to Keepers of the Word in Saint George. After his time in service, his strong work ethic would not allow him permanent retirement. He continued on to work as a Chief Stewart for Offshore Food Company as well as Ogden Food Service. He was a member of the American Leopard Cur Breeders Association and being an avid sportsman was a member of the Charleston Hunting Club as well as several various other sports related associations.

He felt a strong devotion to the youth, and after the death of his wife in February of 2010, he was the contributing founder of The Aline Carden Venture Crew, Group No. 747, of the Boy Scouts of American with the American Indian Scouting Association.

Surviving are: a son, Paul Carden and his wife Renee of Walterboro; a daughter, Tina Carden of Walterboro; a brother, Andrew J. Carden, Jr. of Walterboro; a granddaughter, Whitney Carden; and one whom he loved as a grandson, Timothy Rabon of Walterboro. There is also a large and loving host of many wonderful and cherished friends whom he leaves behind.

In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: The Aline Carden Venture Crew, Group No. 747, care of 107 Pierce Road, Cottageville, South Carolina 29435.
