George R. Addison, Sr.

February 12, 1941 — September 10, 2024

Cottageville, South Carolina

The Honorable George Randolph Addison, Sr., age 83, of Peirce Road in the heart of his beloved town, Cottageville, South Carolina, entered into rest peacefully Tuesday afternoon, September 10, 2024, at his residence.

Born February 12, 1941, at the old homeplace in Cottageville, he was a son of the late Robert Lawrence Addison and the late Vivian Gruber Addison.  George possessed a strong and devoted work ethic as well as an entrepreneurial spirit.  He worked for thirty-one years at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, where he started as a machinist and, eventually, retired as a Nuclear Submarine Inspector.  He served his community on the Town Council for a number of years and was the Mayor of Cottageville for nearly two decades.  The devotion to the people and community was with unwavering dedication and loyalty and he was ever so proud of his time in office.   Along with his wife, they established the iconic Grand Central Stop (BP) which was a beloved staple for its service, prices, and delicious hot bar.  He was a licensed real estate agent and through that passion the last, and probably one of Geroge’s greatest accomplishments, was Harmony Hall, a subdivision he created and oversaw the development of.  He was a member of Rehoboth Methodist Church in Cottageville.  George was a man of many talents and abilities.  He possessed the uncanny ability of wood crafting with the most intricate of details.

Surviving are: his wife of sixty-one years, Mrs. Lorine Headden Addison; two sons, Randy Addison of Atlanta and Matthew Addison (Martin Gatewood) of Blackville; a brother, Robert “Bob” Addison (Lee) of Saint George; and a sister, Jackie Addison Hayne (Bill) of Anderson; as well as a large host of nieces and nephews, whom he adored as his own children.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Addison Hamlet.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North  Michigan Avenue, Floor 17 Chicago, Illinois 60601.
