Furman Peters

Mr. Furman Delano Peters, age 81, entered into eternal rest early Tuesday morning, November 18, 2014, at his home on Madison Street in Ehrhardt following an extended and courageous battle for his life. Furman was married to Mrs. Alice “Frances” Vest Peters and was also the widower of Mrs. Nancy Morningstar Peters to whom he was married to for fifty-five years at the time of her death in 2008.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 o’clock Friday afternoon, November 21, 2014, from Ehrhardt Baptist Church, 427 Allen Street, Ehrhardt. The Reverend Kelley Shanks officiating. Interment will follow in Ehrhardt Cemetery.

Born October 26, 1933, in the Lodge community of Colleton County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Otis and Ruby Peters. Furman had a desire to serve our country, and because of his brothers’ enlistments within the United States Military, he served locally from the South Carolina National Guard. He served a dedicated and distinguished career with the DuPont Company, having retired as a supervisor after forty-two years from the Savannah River Site. Furman demonstrated his strong work ethic and untiring devotion to his responsibilities in his life. He served the Town of Ehrhardt as a member of County Council where he was elected and served numerous terms and was also Mayor Pro-tem, and was also Police Commissioner for over twenty years. Furman wore many hats in his eighty-one years of life. As an entrepreneur, he was the founder and owner of Peter’s Enterprises in Ehrhardt; as a father, he will be fondly remembered for the unwavering devotion he had for his family; and as a sportsman, he will be fondly remembered for his avid love of sports. His greatest pastime was golfing; however, he always enjoyed hunting, fishing, and a good game of cards. He was a Master Mason having been a member of the former Ehrhardt Masonic Lodge, No. 247, and was a member of the Ehrhardt Hunting Club.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: his children, Furman D. “Butch” Peters, Jr. of Aiken, Judy Ellen Peters Varnes of Rosinville, Thomas Keith Peters of Ehrhardt, Sallie Zorn and her husband Leon of Barnwell, Debra Martin of Ehrhardt, and Becky Sandifer and her husband Mark of Barnwell; a sister, Miriam McMillian of Lodge; and dear friend, Mack Clayton. There are twenty-four grandchildren to include, Tommy Layden and his wife Melanie, Charles Glenn Bishop and his wife Michelle, Angie Peters Waltz and her husband Lee, Chris Peters and his wife Nicole, Maggie Peters Neblett and her husband Brian, and Hunter Peters as well as numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Clarence Eugene “Gene” Peters and Keith Thomas Hunt; and a great grandson.
