Ford D. Hitchens

February 1, 1951 — April 30, 2015

Mr. Ford Delaney Hitchens, age 64, entered into rest Thursday, April 30, 2015, at his home on Azalea Drive in Walterboro.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Monday morning, May 4, 2015, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.  The Reverend Rich Johnston officiating.  Interment will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.  The family has requested that officers of the Walterboro Elks serve as honorary escorts and their presence is requested at The Funeral Chapel at 10:30 that morning.

Born February 1, 1951, a son of the late Ford Delaney Hitchens, Jr. and the late Viola Hager Hitchens, he was a native and resident of Pocomoke City, Maryland until making the lowcountry of South Carolina his home for the past thirty years.    Ford worked a dedicated and faithful career with Eckerd Drug Store in Walterboro, which later transitioned to Rite Aid Pharmacy, for thirty years retiring as a manager in 2011.  He was a member of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Walterboro.   He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, having joined and began his dedication to the Lodge at Pocomoke City, Maryland Lodge No. 1624.  After moving to Walterboro, he again became active with the Elks Lodge, and was currently serving as the Exalted Ruler of Walterboro Lodge No. 1988; and has also served as the 2014 Chairman of the House Committee as well as in many other areas of the Lodge’s work.   Ford will always be remembered for the love and compassion he had for his family and others.  He centered his life around the wants and needs of his wife, son and three beloved grandchildren.   He was an avid sports fan, always promoting and supporting both the Baltimore Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles.

Surviving are: his wife of forty-wo years, Mrs. Becky Llewellyn Hitchens; a son, Paul Delaney Hitchens of Walterboro; three grandchildren, Madeline Claire Hitchens, Sarah Grace Hitchens, and Andrew Paul Hitchens; and a brother-in-law, Jeffrey S. Llewellyn and his wife Patti of North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: Walterboro Elks Lodge, No. 1988, Post Office Box 202, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
