Floyd Lyons

February 25, 1925 — April 10, 2014

Second Mate Floyd Osborn Lyons, United States Merchant Marines (Ret.), age 89, of Schoolhouse Road in the Sniders Community of Ruffin, entered into rest Thursday morning, April 10, 2014, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, April 12, 2014, from Pine Grove Baptist Church, No. 1, 99 Pine Grove Road, Walterboro. The Reverend Ken McCaskill officiating. Interment will follow in the Churchyard.

The family will receive friends prior to the funeral ceremony that Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 o'clock in the church sanctuary.

Born February 25, 1925, a native and lifelong resident of Colleton County, he was a son of the late Samuel Lyons and the late Agnes Knight Lyons. Following graduation from Walterboro High School, at the age of 17, Floyd entered the United States Merchant Maries which became his life and retired after forty plus years of service in active duty with the rank of Second Mate. For a short period of time during World War II, he served in the United States Navy. He was an active member of Pine Grove Baptist Church No. 1 in Walterboro.

Surviving are: his wife of forty-four years, Mrs. Faye Mixson Lyons; a daughter, Doris Smoak Nettles of Ruffin; a brother, James Parker Lyons of Moncks Corner; and a sister, Geneva Strickland of Ashton. There are two grandchildren, Kathy Mizell and her husband Arlen Mizell of Knoxville, Tennessee and Carolette Jackson and her husband Reverend David Jackson of Walterboro; six great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Carroll Nettles; and a granddaughter, Lynn Preveaux.
