Essie Breland Tumbleston

Mrs. Essie Breland Tumbleston, age 81, of Walterboro, entered into rest Sunday morning, August 28, 2022, surrounded by her family at her residence.  She was the loving wife of sixty years to the late Mr. Haskell Thomas Tumbleston.

Born November 30, 1940 in Colleton County, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Eugene Presley Breland and the late Nellie Pellum Breland.  She worked for many years at the former Walterboro Feed and Garden where she retired as a secretary and bookkeeper.   A lifelong member of Black Creek Baptist Church, she served faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher for many years, was a choir member, and served on various committees throughout her lifetime.   She was always present and always willing to serve.  Her passion was in doing for others in her community and was an excellent southern cook.   Essie always centered her life around her family and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.   She had also attended Open Arms Fellowship in Hampton alongside her daughter Diane and her family.

Surviving are: two daughters, Diane Tumbleston Stanley and her husband Ronnie of Varnville and Teresa Tumbleston Hiers of Harleyville; a sister, Betty Wiggins and her husband Alford of Walterboro; four grandchildren, Leah Stanley, Lydia Stanley Jarrell and her husband Glen, Hannah Hiers Hinman and her husband Cody and Roger Gould; nine great grandchildren, Skyler, Gage, Abigail, Addie, Weston, Millie, Ivy, Miracle, and Wyatt; a sister-in-law, Gail Smith of Bluffton; a brother-in-law, Don Miller of Walterboro.  She is also survived by her dear friend, Witsell Fraser; and her beloved and constant K9 companion, “Trixie”.  She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, The Reverend Terry Hiers; a brother, Lewis Ulmer Breland; a sister, Jessie Breland Miller; and a brother-in-law, Bill Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, August 31, 2022, in The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.   Interment will follow in Black Creek Baptist Cemetery, 4931 Black Creek Road, Walterboro.
