Elaine R. Hiers, 58, of Ehrhardt, S.C. entered the gates of heaven on Sunday, February 17, 2013 while hospitalized in Beaufort, S.C. after a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held 2 oclock, Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at St. Johns Baptist Church, Ehrhardt. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
She was an avid baker with many requests for her popular strawberry cake, a lover of sour apple Blow Pops and cherry Pepsi, and demonstrated the prime example of strong faith and courage. Elaine was a true southern lady with continued poise, elegance, and beauty throughout her last days. She was known to many as a local celebrity in Ehrhardt as she served as the rural mail carrier for over 25 years. Elaine was born in Morganton, N.C. and later moved to Bamberg, S.C. where her dad owned and operated the Ehrhardt IGA. This very same grocery store is where Elaine met her husband, Mr. Alvin Hiers of Ehrhardt, and where he delivered her very first box of Valentines candy over 35 years ago. She was the loving mother of two children and Nana to three grandchildren. She was known to her family and friends as a calm and steady rock to lean on in times of trouble or need and a trusted and loyal friend too many. To know Elaine was to love her.
Elaine is survived by her husband, Mr. Jacob Alvin Hiers, Ehrhardt, S.C.; daughter, Allison (Jason) of Beaufort, S.C.; son, Kyle (Kate) of Villa Rica, GA; grandchildren, Shelby and Jace Bessinger, both of Beaufort, SC and Wade Williamson (Heather) of Eufala, AL; mother, Ms. Barbara Riddle, Morganton, N.C., mother-in-law, Ms. Sarah Hiers, brother, Stan Riddle, Claremont, N.C.; sister, Ms. Teresa Layden, Bamberg, S.C.; and brother, Jody Riddle (Michelle), Taylorsville, N.C.; predeceased by her father, Mr. Ted Riddle and her father-in-law, Mr. Carroll Hiers; and numerous aunts, uncles, and nieces and nephews.
The family gratefully acknowledges the tremendous outpouring of love throughout the church family, community, family and friends. Words cannot express our sincere appreciation for the numerous prayers, visits, calls, messages, and acts of kindness; we are forever grateful for the wonderful tributes in honor of a most wonderful lady, Elaine R. Hiers.
