Mr. Edward Eugene Spires, age 92, of Islandton and a longtime resident of Cottageville, entered into rest Saturday afternoon, July 2, 2016, at the Veteran’s Victory House in Walterboro. He was the loving husband of the late Mrs. Mattie Ruth Kemmerlin Spires.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 am, Thursday, July 7, 2016 from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow that afternoon at 3 pm in Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston.
Born May 9, 1924 in West Columbia, he was a son of the late Elvin Eugene Spires and the late Joe Mae Carroll Spires. He served our country faithfully in the United States Army as a Tech4 with the 103 Medical Division during World War II. He was the owner and operator of his own trucking company and was known by the CB handle, “Match Maker”. He was a longtime member of Maple Cane Baptist Church and also attended the Moselle Church of God of Prophecy. He was an avid outdoorsman who dearly loving camping, blue grass music and fishing and in earlier years was active with his local hunting clubs.
Surviving are: three sons, Michael Spires and his wife Deanna of Cottageville, Troy Spires of Walterboro, and Billy Kirby and his wife Theresa of Ruffin; two daughters, Melanie McAlhaney and her husband Larry of Ruffin and Donna Hartley of Swansea; longtime friend, Myrtle Gibson of Varnville; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Spires; and a grandson, Chucky Spires.
