Duane Newington

Mr. Duane Edwin Newington, 89, of 314 Hendersonville Highway in Walterboro, entered into rest Sunday morning, January 27, 2013, at his residence under the care of Amedisys Hospice.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, February 1, 2013, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend Craig Crosby officiating. Entombment with military honors provided by the United States Navy will follow in Glendale Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.

Born December 1, 1923, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was a son of the late Ezra Elliot Newington and the late Dorothy Loraine Miller Newington. He served his country faithfully in the United States Navy during World War II and was also a quality control analysis for General Motors having retired from their operations in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He and Mrs. Newington resided in Venice, Florida before making the Walterboro area their home in June of 2009. He was a member of Evangelical Covenant Church in the Bay Indies community of Venice, Florida and was locally attending with his family at Bethel United Methodist Church – downtown Walterboro. He will be fondly recalled for his love of baseball, golf, bowling, and horseshoes, as well as many other varieties of sports.

Surviving are: his loving wife of sixty-six years, Mrs. Vera Jones Newington; three sons, Colonel Edwin Newington, United States Army (Ret.) and his wife Marlene of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Terry Newington and his wife Sally of Plainwell, Michigan, and Douglas Newington of Galesburg, Michigan; and two daughters, Sandra Newington Katchuk and her husband Michael of Walterboro and Sally Newington LaGrow and her husband Michael of Plainwell, Michigan. There are fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild that also survives.
