Biography

Mr. Douglas MacArthur Smith, 69, of 140 Smith Road entered into his eternal rest on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 11 o'clock, Saturday morning, March 24, 2012, at the Varnville First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Tommy Kelly officiating. Burial will be in the Grimes Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born September 28, 1942 in Grays and was a son of the late Henry D. Smith and Catherine Robinson Smith. He was a former insurance agent of 25 years for the Piedmont Insurance Company. In 1981 he went to work for the United States Postal Service retiring as a mail handler. He was a member the Varnville First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Railroad Sunday School Class. He was a graduate from the Lowcountry Technical College. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Hampton-Varnville Jaycees Club and Hampton-Varnville Booster Club. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was an avid gardener and loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed visiting the elderly and loved everyone.

Surviving are: his wife of 50 years, Marlene Thames Smith, children, Douglas M. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Springfield, GA, Kelvin S. Smith and his wife, Angie of Elgin, SC and Katie Carr and her husband, Kane of Grays, sister, Annette Smith and her husband, Edison of Grays, grandchildren, Curtis DuBose, Michael Breland, Kristopher Carr and Victoria Carr and sister in laws, Betty Sanders of Beaufort and Ella Mae Smith of Bluffton. He was predeceased by brothers, Bill, Herbert and James Smith and sister, Ella Raines.
