Mr. Douglas Ray McMillan, Sr., 71, of Round O, entered into rest Thursday afternoon, November 20, 2014, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. He was the husband of thirty-four years to the late Mrs. Mary Simmons McMillan at the time of her death in 2002.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 oclock Monday afternoon, November 24, 2014, in The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Entombment with military honors will follow in Glendale Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, 2410 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.
Following the committal ceremony, the family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Linda W. Withrow, 4301 Faust Street, Bamberg, South Carolina.
Born August 9, 1943, in the Colston Community of Bamberg County, he was a son of the late Cecil R. McMillan and the late Alberta Louise Crider McMillan. He served our country faithfully in the United States Army prior to serving in the South Carolina National Guard until his retirement from the service. He was a partner alongside his father in the familys construction business, McMillan Construction Company in Bamberg and was an instructor for many years at the Bamberg Job Corp under the Home Builders Association.
He was born and reared in the First Baptist Church of Bamberg. Being outside was his greatest pastime. He was a member of the Mashawville Hunting Club, and when not hunting, he could be found fishing. He was a member and Past Governor of the Walterboro Moose Lodge and was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Walterboro Lodge No. 1988 where with both organizations he was extremely active and a beloved icon. A great shag dancer, he will be fondly remembered for the smile he possessed and the great kindred spirit he always shared with others.
Surviving are: a son, Douglas Ray McMillan, Jr. (Tammy); a grandson, Brent Jordan McMillan; and two step-grandchildren, Hayden DeLoach and Ava Carroll; his wife, Cynthia DeHay McMillan and her son Casey; two sisters, Linda McMillan Withrow (Mike) and Pat McMillan Diggle (Charlie). There are numerous nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews that also survive along with a host of beloved friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pamela McMillan Zurcik.
