WALTERBORO – Mrs. Dorothy Campbell James Haws, age 100, entered into rest Saturday afternoon, April 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of her adoring family and under the care of Amedisys Hospice. Dorothy was the loving wife of the late Mr. George H. Haws, who preceded her in death in 2019.
Born January 9, 1926, in Walterboro, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Edward Palmer Campbell, Sr. and the late Laura Whilden Hill Campbell. A licensed practical nurse, she worked for several years for Dr. Joseph Flowers as well as at our area hospital and nursing facilities before making Merritt, Florida her home where she eventually retired. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of Walterboro Chapter No. 147 – Order of the Eastern Star. She possessed great skill at needlework, having created many beautiful pieces that are priceless treasures to her family. She was also a great southern cook and will forever be remembered for her love of baking. She attended with her daughter and son-in-law at The Well of Walterboro.
Surviving are: a son, Tommy James and his wife Julie of Walterboro; a daughter, Becky Owsley and her husband Jim of Walterboro; four grandchildren, Lucas Rizer (Alix), Laura Rizer, Justin Addison (Liz), Kelby Easterling (Ashli), and Joshua James (Angie), and five great grandchildren, Daisy, James, Jaxon, Aurelia, and Vivienne as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Palmer Campbell, Jr.; two sisters, Gladys Campbell Jenson and Laura Lynn Campbell Hughes; and her children’s father whom she was married to for many years, Lloyd James, Sr.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in her memory to the charity of one’s own choosing or to the following: Dementia Society of America, Post Office Box 600, Doylestown, Pennsylvania 18901; or to, Friends of Colleton County Animal Shelter, 33 Poor Farm Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
A Life Celebration Service will be conducted at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon, April 18, 2026, from The Well of Walterboro, 320 Jones Swamp Road, Walterboro. Pastor Stephen Baker officiating.
