Mr. James Donnie “Pappy” Bennett, 73, of Walterboro, entered into rest Monday, January 20, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Born September 26, 1951, in Walterboro, South Carolina, he was a son of the late John Wesley “J.W.” Bennett, Jr. and the late June Blocker Bennett. He was a longtime employee of Walterboro Veneer and was retired from J.H. Hiers Construction. Donnie was an avid outdoorsman. He dearly loved hunting and fishing and sharing tales of his excursions with others. He was an excellent cook and always enjoyed hosting Beaufort Boils and fish fry’s. Sports and family were another big part of his life. When his girls were younger, he was a softball coach and as his grands grew-up, he was always present at their baseball games and races. He was raised in the family church, Evergreen Christian Church.
Surviving are: his wife of fifty-three years, Mrs. Barbara Fender Bennett; two daughters, Missy Bennett and Ashley Bennett Hadwin (Jason) all of Walterboro; three sisters, Teresa Bennett of Ruffin, Debbie Bennett of Ruffin, and Darlene Barker (Jimi) of Summerville; five grandchildren, Whitney Rogers (Nick Crosby), Chase Hadwin (Jenna Varner), Morgan Bennett, Dustin “Jim Bob” Hadwin, and Easton Hadwin; and one great grandchild, Fisher Crosby; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved K9 companion, Remi Kate.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Pruitt Hospice and nurses, Amy Covington and Jeanette Riley for the exceptional care and love they provided during the tenure of Mr. Bennett’s illness.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5 o’clock Friday afternoon, January 24, 2025, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Al Stanley will officiate. The family will receive friends following the funeral ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed to the following: St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital; or to, Shriners Hospital for Children.
