WALTERBORO " Mr. Dennis Hillard Varner, 89, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Thursday morning, February 19, 2009, at the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro.



Funeral services will be conducted 3 oclock Sunday afternoon, February 28, 2009, from Grace Advent Christian Church, 398 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro. Interment with military honors provided by the United States Army will follow in the church cemetery.



Mr. Varner was born April 23, 1919, in Ridgeville, and was a son of the late Joseph P. Varner and the late Annie Saulisbury Varner. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army during World War II with the Engineers Combat Battalion. During his tenure with the military he was decorated with five bronze stars and saw action in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was a retired carpenter and was a longtime member of Grace Advent Christian Church where he was a former Sunday School Teacher. He will be remembered for his love of fishing the local creeks of Colleton County and reading.



Surviving are: his wife of sixty years, Mrs. Murdelle Barnes Varner; two sons, Terry L. Varner and his wife Linda of Walterboro and Larry D. Varner and his wife Rita of Brunson; a brother, Vance Shorty Varner of Ridgeville; and a sister, Doris Powell of Summerville. There are six grandchildren, Tina Varner and her fianc Bill Davis of Atlanta, Georgia, Shannon Varner and her fianc, Michael Dandridge of Walterboro, Wendy V. Frank and her husband Jimmy of Walterboro, Stephanie Gibson and her husband Eddie of Brunson, Leslie Atwood and her husband Chad of Brunson, and Kellie Varner of Brunson; as well as, five great grandchildren, Ellis Ann, Dawson, Grier, Morgan, and Zachary.



Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorials be directed in his memory to: Grace Church, 398 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
