Delorise Jean Acosta

Mrs. Delorise Jean Acosta, 78, of Acosta Road in Cottageville, entered into rest Monday morning, April 22, 2013, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. She was the wife of the late Mr. Ricardo D. Acosta.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Thursday morning, April 25, 2013, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend Levon Jerkins officiating. Interment will follow in Cottageville Cemetery, Old Jacksonboro Road, Cottageville.

Born September 9, 1934, a native of Gastonia, North Carolina she was a daughter of the late James Kirk Whittlesey and the late Jenny Leonard Balentine. She was a longtime resident of Cottageville where she was lovingly known by her community as “Momma Jean”. For sixteen years, she served on Cottageville Town Council and also served as the council’s Mayor Pro Tem. During her time on town council, she was an influential part of starting the town’s annual hanging of the lighted Christmas decorations. As a entrepreneur, she owned many business which proved to be a successful venture for her, having been the owner of Video Station in Cottageville, Gator’s Restaurant in Ravenel, and a convenience store. She was a retired credit manager from Sears and was a member of Cottageville Baptist Church. She will be fondly remembered for her talent at oil paintings, having created many beautiful works on canvas; and also for her humorous character always having a joke to share.

Surviving are: a son, The Reverend James Edward Pedigo, Sr. and his wife Kelly Green Pedigo of Cottageville, six daughters, Jeanne Lorise Talmage and her husband Lawrence Eugene Talmage of Richland, Washington, Jina Pedigo Johnson and her husband R. Scott Johnson of Cottageville, Julia Schulz Dawson and her husband Dr. Gordon R. Dawson of Mount Pleasant, Patricia David Norris and her husband Ralph Norris of Texas, Rebecca David, and Judy Davis Snyder of Athens, Georgia; and two brother, James Whittlesey of Knoxville, Tennessee and Thomas Balentine of Cramerton, North Carolina. There are twenty grandchildren to include, Jessica Rahimi, Jacob Talmage, Meghan Khanna, Deven Khanna, Vidhata Talmage, James Edward Pedigo, Jr., Kaleigh Grace Pedigo, Sydney Ruth Pedigo, Autumn Jade Johnson, Austin Scott Johnson, Charlsie Tarpley and her husband Michael, Julianna Sanders, Alexis Dawson, and Olivia Dawson; and six great grandchildren to include, Christopher Ethan Horne, Eleanore Tarpley and Cecelia Tarpley; as well as one she loved as a sister, Thelma Berckman of Mount Holly, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Eckard.
