Mr. Daniel Edward Winstead, affectionately known to everyone as “Danny”, 78, of North Charleston, entered into eternal rest Sunday, April 28, 2024, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Born November 1, 1945, in Ridgeland, he was a son of the late Samuel Edward Winstead and Blanche Altman Winstead. He was raised in Hampton, South Carolina and was a graduate of Wade Hampton High School. While in school he played many sports and was inducted to the Hampton Hall of Fame for his athletic ability. He also attended Carson Newman College in Tennessee on a football scholarship. Danny was a devoted and faithful member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon for many years, served as a church trustee, and was the founder of the Food Bank Distribution.
Danny served his country in the South Carolina Army National Guard for 6 years. For many years, he worked for Southern Bell, working in almost every capacity from the ground up, eventually ending up in Sales. He then went to the State House in Columbia where he was a South Carolina Legislator. Finally, he was the manager of a sales group for Acosta.
Surviving are: his wife of 57 years, Iris Mole Winstead of North Charleston; brother-in-law, Hoyt Mole and his wife Elender of Hampton; sister-in-law, Ann Edwards and her husband Michael of Clyde, North Carolina; nieces, Catherine Terry and her husband Alan, Cheri Sprankle and her husband Frank, and Kristel Causby and her husband Cory; great nieces and nephews, Jacob Terry and his wife Kelsey, Hannah Welch and her husband Brice, Alyssa Sprankle, Keegan Sprankle, Laurel Causby, and Bryce Causby; and one great great nephew, Marshall Welch.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to: Hillcrest Baptist Church, Food Bank Distribution, 3595 Ashley Phosphate Road, North Charleston, South Carolina 29418.
Funeral services will be held 11 o’clock, Wednesday morning, May 1, 2024, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 3595 Ashley Phosphate Road, North Charleston. Interment will be held at 3 o’clock that afternoon in Crocketville Cemetery, 3945 Bamberg Highway, Hampton.
The family will receive friends Wednesday morning from 10 am until the hour of service in the church sanctuary.
