Commander Michael J. Showers

CDR Michael James Showers, United States Navy, Ret., age 78, of Goose Creek, entered into rest Saturday afternoon, February 8, 2025, at the Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro.

Born in 1946 to Hugh Mansfield Showers and Annabeth Voss in Tannersville, New York, Michael was the third of six children, a proud brother to Frederick, Elizabeth Showers Mann, Barbara Showers Browne, Ralph, and Arthur.

Blessed with an active imagination and a mind for mathematics, Michael excelled in academics and sports such as football and basketball and was voted the “Class Brain”, “Most Dependable”, and “Most Likely to Succeed” by his peers at the Hunter-Tannersville Central High School.

Michael was accepted into the United States Naval Academy after high school and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Science, receiving his commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy. Michael then joined the submarine force, a career path which would shape the rest of his life.

In his early naval career, Michael served on the USS Patrick Henry (SSBN-599), the USS Seadragon (SSN-584), and the USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601). Michael then became the Commanding Officer of the USS Henry L. Stimson (SSBN-655) after his promotion to Commander, the rank that he would continue to hold until his retirement from the United States Navy in 1991. In total, Michael served his country for 23 years.

After Michael’s military career, he and his family settled in Goose Creek, South Carolina, where he continued his service to his community.

Michael is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marilyn Jane Tyler Showers and his three sons, Michael Andrew Showers, Timothy Mansfield Showers, and Tyler Voss Showers.

Funeral services with military honors will be conducted at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon, February 20, 2025, from Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundry Street, Beaufort.

Friends may visit from 5 o’clock until 7 o’clock Wednesday evening, February 19, 2025, at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, Charleston.
