Biography

Mr. Clinton Lee Hughes, 67, of Jefferies Highway, Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 11 am, Friday, November 18, 2011 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Hughes was born February 20, 1944 in Walterboro and was a son of the late Henry Howard Hughes and Mary Ann McAlhany Hughes. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a member of Unity Masonic Lodge # 55 in Walterboro. He enjoyed sports and coached Dixie League Baseball and the church softball league.

He was a master carpenter by trade and had a loving passion for doing restoration work on historic homes in downtown Charleston. He was employed by H.A. DeCosta Company, Historic Traditions and G.F. Fennell Construction. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. When he was not working or spending time with his family, he enjoyed being outdoors. He was often accompanied by his faithful black lab, Rebel.

Surviving are: his wife of 44 years, Rhonda Jacqueline "Jackie" Chaltraw Hughes; daughter, Rhonda Howell and her husband Lee Howell of Clarksville, Tennessee; son, Clinton Lee Hughes, Jr. and his wife Jennifer Beach Hughes of Walterboro; grandchildren, Steven Lee Robertson, Jordan Andrew Robertson and Matthew Aaron Robertson, all of Clarksville, Tennessee and Jessica Renee Beach Hughes of Walterboro; brothers, Jackson Hughes of Walterboro and Ernie Hughes of Islandton; and sisters, Mary Lou Bazzle of Summerville, Martha Ray Beach of Elloree, Bettye Voight of Aiken, Clara Dopson of Luray and Shirley Smith of Branchville. He was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Henry, Charles and Wendell Hughes.
