Mrs. Mary Christine Payne, 89, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest, Monday morning, June 8, 2026, at her daughter’s residence. She was the wife of the late Raymond Wallace Payne.
Born December 26, 1936, in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late James David Dunagan and Lillie Victoria Williams Dunagan. She was a former weaver for JP Stevens in Walterboro. Christine enjoyed dancing, camping, attending car races, fishing, working in her yard, and good music. She loved to travel and especially loved spending the day at Edisto Beach. Most of all, she loved her family and adored all of her grandchildren, to whom she was known as “Memmie”, and was always the backbone of her family.
Surviving are: her daughters, Dianne Payne O’Bryant of Walterboro, Wanda Payne O’Bryant of Walterboro, and Vickie Payne Tripp (Danny) of Ruffin; brothers, Bobby Joe Dunagan and Wayne Dunagan (Mary), both of Travelers Rest; sister, Annie Sue Williams; grandchildren, Hope Youmans Creel (Tommy) of Walterboro, Crissy Pye Rivera (Rick) of Virginia, Charles “Bubba” O’Bryant (Tara) of Walterboro, Shannon Pye of Walterboro, Lathon Tripp (Jordan) of Ruffin, Daniel Pye (Kelly) of Smoaks, and Alicia Tripp; great grandchildren, Anthony “AJ” Chapman, William “Will” O’Bryant, Lindsey Chapman, Skyler Pye, Sydney Rae Beach Aquino (Nelson), Dillon Youmans, Laci Tripp, Tradd Tripp, Preston Clark, Michael Marrero, and Brittany Willis; great great grandchildren, Waylon Aquino, Aron Creed Brannock, Devyn Thompson, and Daelyn Thompson; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved and adored. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Logan Tripp; sons-in-law, Ronnie Pye, Charles O’Bryant and Billy O’Bryant; brothers, James Dunagan and Kenneth Dunagan.
The family would like to especially thank the staff of Amedysis Hospice for the dedication, care and support the so selfishly provided to Christine.
Funeral services will be held at 4 o’clock Thursday afternoon, June 11, 2026, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The family will receive friends following the service until 6 o’clock at the funeral home.
Interment will follow at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2026, in Mountain View Memorial Park, 7 Duncan Road, Travelers Rest, South Carolina.
