Mrs. Christine Brownlee Martin, affectionately known by many as "Mrs. Chris", age 81, of Jones Swamp Road, Walterboro, entered into rest Wednesday afternoon, May 28, 2014, at her residence while under the care of Hospice Care of South Carolina. She was the wife of the late Mr. Joseph Martin.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, June 1, 2014, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend Dan Fogle officiating. Interment will follow in Peniel Baptist Churchyard, 37 Forks Road, Islandton.
Born December 7, 1932, a native of Dorchester County, she was a daughter of the late Sinclair Brownlee and the late Blanche Canady Brownlee. For nearly thirty years of her life, she resided in Saint George prior to making Walterboro her home for the past thirty-five years. She was a cosmetologist having owned and operated Chris' Beauty Salon in Saint George as well as having worked in Walterboro. She was also a talented seamstress having been employed by Saint George Sewing Room and Smoaks Manufacturing, she loved sewing and over the years has crafted many beautiful quilts and baby blankets that are true treasures to the ones she created them for. She had also worked at Asten Hill in Walterboro. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Saint George. Mrs. Chris will be fondly remembered for the love and devotion she possessed for her family as well as her avid love for fishing fresh water creeks and tending to her flowers.
Surviving are: a son, Gene J. Ahl and his wife Wanda of Walterboro; a daughter, Debbie Ahl of Coco, Florida; and a brother, Allen Brownlee and his wife Ella Mae of Saint George. There are six grandchildren, William Kirkland and his wife Kim, James Kirkland and his wife Kezie, Chrissy Traxler, David Traxler, Chasity Ahl, and Steve Lawson; and eight great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Ahl and Steven D. Ahl; two brothers, Clyde and Roger Brownlee ; and two sisters, Frances Brownlee Bailey and Jackie Poland.
