Mr. Charles Wallace Rutherford, 80, of Jacksonboro, South Carolina, entered into rest on the morning of January 7, 2026 at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC.
Born April 20, 1945, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, he was a son of the late James Wallace Rutherford and the late Gladys Johnson Rutherford who moved to his hometown of Huntington, West Virginia shortly after his birth. He was proud to serve our country faithfully in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era. Chuck founded Woodlands Lumber Company over forty years ago in Augusta, Georgia, which he had the privilege of seeing become a very successful business venture with multiple locations throughout the continental United States. For the past twenty-three years, he has made the Lowcountry of South Carolina his home. He was a well-established member of the Jacksonboro Community and attended, along with his wife, Jacksonboro Baptist Church. To say that he was an avid outdoorsman would be an understatement - if it flew, swam, walked or crawled, he figured out how to catch it. To say that he loved to cook is understated as well; from his grills, smokers and cast iron skillets, there was not a finer piece of meat ever cooked.
He was a member of the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association and the Jack Daniel’s’ “Tennessee Squire” Association.
Surviving are: his wife of fifty-two years, Mrs. Linda Jeannette Rutherford; a daughter, Summer Leigh Rutherford Wilkes of Charles Town, West Virginia; a sister, Sandra Jo Wellman (Jim) of Atlanta, Georgia; and Linda’s two daughters, Dawn Marie Stroupe and Wendy Stroupe Chandler (Perry) all of Valdosta, Georgia. He is also survived by their seven grandchildren who loved their Papaw: Jeremiah Jackson Wilkes, Charles Arden Wilkes, Justin David Chandler, Brandon Terrell Chandler, Blaine Alexander Chandler, Brooke Chandler, and Everly Marie Stroupe; and a great grandchild, Crew McTier Chandler. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Perry Ward Chandler; a sister, Glenna Hockenbery, and her husband Bill; and a brother, Gregory Rutherford. He also had several nieces and nephews who dearly loved their Uncle Chuck.
Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has requested that memorials be directed in his memory to the following: Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee38105; or to, Lowcountry Dreams Youth Hunt, care of Tommy Crosby, 711 War Eagle Road, Smoaks, South Carolina 29481.
