Mr. Charles Bert Hughes, Jr., 69, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Trident Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 2 pm, Monday, April 30, 2012 at Doctor's Creek Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hughes was born May 28, 1942 in Beaufort and was a son of the late Charles Bert Hughes, Sr. and Bessie Lee Smyly Hughes. He was a retired carpenter and was a member of Doctor's Creek Baptist Church. A local celebrity on the "Swap Shop", he was known as "Charlie the Chicken Man." Anyone who knew him loved him and knew of his love for his animals, but most of all, knew of his love for his family. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are: his wife, Peggy Bazzle Hughes of Walterboro; children, Penny Crosby (Troy) of Walterboro, Dodi Davis of Walterboro, Roger Hughes (Zelda) of Walterboro, Sarah Garvin of Walterboro, Tommy Garvin (Carolyn) of Adams Run, Andy Garvin (Sherry) of Walterboro, Timmy Garvin (Dinah) of Adams Run, and Lynn Webster (Danny) of Adams Run; brothers, Bill Hughes (Frances) of Orangeburg and Marion Hughes (Judy) of Simpsonville; sister, Barbara Bokman of Barnwell; 24 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sons, Charles Bert Hughes, III and Randall Gregg Hughes; a daughter-in-law, Tina Hughes; and a sister, Virginia Farrell.
