Charles McRoy Boyles, Sr. of Hampton, South Carolina died Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the Veterans Victory House Nursing Home in Walterboro, South Carolina.
Mr. Boyles was a former Mayor of Hampton, South Carolina and was born in Allendale County on June 12th, 1918 to the late William McRoy Boyles and Sarah Baxley Boyles. Mr. Boyles attended schools in both Allendale and Hampton County, graduating from Hampton High School in 1936. Mr. Boyles was married to his sweetheart, the late Sue Rivers Boyles, on July 23rd, 1938.
He served his Country in the United States Army in 1944 and 1945. His business life was spent in the furniture, appliance, mobile home, and real estate business in Hampton. Mr. Boyles was a former Elder and Sunday School Teacher at Higher Ground Christian Fellowship and was a former Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at The First Baptist Church of Hampton, where his is still a member.
Mr. Boyles also served as a Councilmember as well as Mayor Pro-Tempore for the Town of Hampton from 1954 until 1962 and Mayor of Hampton from 1962 until 1976 for a total of 22 years.
Mr. Boyles is survived by one son, Charles M. Boyles, Jr. and wife, Marcia of Hampton. He also has two daughters, Jackie Walker and husband, Bob of Dublin, Georgia and Sara Sue Wood of Hilton Head. There are 8 grandchildren, Charles Michael Boyles, Sr., and wife Tina, of Hampton, Allen Boyles, and wife Melinda, of Virginia, Jason Brooks Boyles of Hampton, Vicki Wood Kinard, and husband John, of Brunson, Mikell Wood and wife Kristy of Hampton, Sandra Walker Stanley, and husband Andy, of Atlanta, Georgia, Allison Walker Holley, and husband Rob, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jackson Walker and wife Buffy, of Dublin, Georgia. There are also 17 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Boyles was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Louise Boyles Boyd and Minnie Boyles Thomas as well as one great-grandson, Nash Walker.
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Jamie Williams of the First Baptist Church of Hampton, Pastor Lewis McCormick, former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hampton, and Pastor Andy Stanley in the Chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home in Varnville, South Carolina on Saturday, February 5th, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Hampton Cemetery Association, c/o Ms. Maxie Lee Harper, Treasurer, 603-4th Street, West, Hampton, South Carolina 29924.
