Carlisle Mcteer Strickland

November 28, 1927 — June 21, 2014

Mr. Carlisle McTeer (Carl) Strickland age 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest at his home on Saturday morning, June 21, 2014.

His funeral service will be conducted 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, June 25, 2014, in Little Swamp United Methodist Church, 17465 Hunter's Chapel Road, Smoaks. Carl's interment will be in the church cemetery.

Born on November 28, 1927, Carl was the son of Utsey Carter Strickland and James Milton (Bub) Strickland. A graduate of Lodge High School and Trident Technical College, Carl was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant with 23 years of service to our country. He was also retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a Production Manager. While in the Air Force, Carl served one tour of duty in Vietnam where he provided communications to spotter planes for which he received the Bronze Star and other honors. In addition, Carl served one tour of duty in Korea during the Korean Conflict as a gunner on B-29s. Carl also served in England, the Philippines, and on multiple air bases within the United States. He was a faithful member of Little Swamp United Methodist Church and Life Member of the Elks Club of Charleston. Carl had a heart for helping others, especially his family.

Survivors include his children Michael Strickland and Vivian Strickland of North Charleston, SC and Earl Jones of Richmond, VA; his stepchildren Michael Matthews (Tammy) of Charleston, SC and Sandy Zapata (Grady) of Jacksonville, FL; his grandchildren Daniel Matthews (Meghan) and Laura Matthews of Charleston, SC; Ashley Moody, Jeffery Moody, and Courtney Moody of Jacksonville, FL.; Kate Jones of Richmond, VA; great-grandchildren Emma Matthews of Charleston, SC and Emma Doherty of Jacksonville, FL; ex-wife Sandra Strickland of Charleston, SC; as well as many adoring nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his brothers Duncan, Searson, Carnell, and A.L. Strickland and sisters Bessie Strickland, Janie Bunton, Vera Maxey, Kathleen Bazzle, Eugenia Fender, Elise Bennett, Alberta Rentz, Eva Goolsby, and Adeline Strickland, as well as his first wife Helen Strickland.
