Burley Colson

Mr. James Burley Colson, 82, of Walterboro, entered into rest peacefully Tuesday evening, February 1, 2022 at Colleton Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Born December 2, 1939 in Early Branch, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Ivy Colson and Wilma Youmans Colson.  He served his country faithfully in the United States Air Force until his retirement.  He also worked and retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard.  He was a lifelong member of the Walterboro Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  He dearly loved his church, had served as a Branch President, and served faithfully in many callings of the church.  Burley was a humble servant who gave to all, demonstrating what a huge heart he possessed, always finding the good in others.  He was multi-talented and helped everyone with anything they needed.

Surviving are: his wife of 54 years, Jo Ann Broderick Colson of Walterboro; children, Katrena Colson Mortenson and her husband Peter of Lehi, Utah, Melanie Colson Taylor and her husband Skip of Charleston, and James Brian Colson and his wife Melissa of Sandy, Utah; grandchildren, Brittany Mortenson, Kimberly Saari (Jordan), Natalie Mortenson, Nathan Mortenson, Lauren Taylor, James B. Colson, Hannah Colson, and Aubrey Colson; great grandchild, June Saari and one expected in April; sister, Beverly Ann Wright of Walterboro; and a host of extended family members.

Funeral services will be held 2 o’clock, Saturday afternoon, February 5, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Walterboro Branch, 1035 Dandridge Road, Walterboro.  Interment will follow in Bedon Baptist Church Cemetery, 2410 Cottageville Highway, Walterboro.

The family will receive friends prior to the funeral ceremony beginning at 1 o’clock at the Walterboro Branch.
