Mrs. Blanche Altman Winstead, 97, of Hampton, entered into eternal rest Wednesday morning, November 30, 2022 at Lowcountry Community Hospice House. She was the widow of the late Sam Winstead to whom she was married 68 years.
Born May 20, 1925 in Hampton, she was a daughter of the late John E. Altman, Sr. and Iva Smith Altman. Blanche began her career as a secretary for the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office and eventually became the first female Deputy Sheriff in Hampton County. She was lifelong member of Sandy Run Baptist Church where she was a loyal member of the church choir and Sunday School teacher for 50 years. She was also active in many other aspects of the church’s work. Blanche was a member of the Lowcountry Rounders square dancing club in Hampton and was an active member of The Order of the Eastern Star for many years. Most of all, she loved her Lord, her family, and her community.
Surviving are: her son, Danny Winstead and his wife Iris of North Charleston; brother-in-law, Terry Ulmer of Hampton; as well as three nephews and their families, and two grand nieces. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Don Altman and his wife Shirley, John E. Altman, Jr. and his wife Virginia, James Altman, Eunice Thomas and her husband Guy, and Vernell Ulmer.
Funeral services will be held 2 o’clock, Saturday afternoon, December 3, 2022 at Sandy Run Baptist Church, Sandy Run Road, Hampton. Interment will follow in Crocketville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o’clock in the church sanctuary.
