Betty Smith

Mrs. Betty Smith, 87, of Grays, entered into rest Saturday, May 31, 2025, at her residence.   She was the loving wife of the late Mr. Marion Ralph Smith.

Born April 23, 1938, in Savannah, Georgia, she was the last surviving of eleven children born to the late Livingston A. “Lev” Smith and the late Nancy Ellen Mixson Smith.  After attending and completing beautician school in Savannah, Georgia, she owned and operated Betty’s Beauty Shop in Grays.  She was also a long-time employee of Westinghouse in Hampton.  She was a member of Pine Level Baptist Church, where she formerly sung in the church choir and had also attended Spirit of Life Ministries.  She will fondly be remembered for her talent at crocheting, having created priceless treasures for each of her grandchildren, and great grandchildren to cherish.  She was an excellent seamstress and also possessed a gifted ability for drawing.  Along with her late husband, she enjoyed camping and together they were members of the “Grays Road Runners” camping group.

Surviving are: two children, Terry R. Smith and his wife Donna of Grays and Janet S. Chassereau of Grays; four grandchildren, Michelle Stanley (Michael), Bryan L. Smith (Nicole), Rhonda Jones (Joshua), and Blake Chassereau (Deann); great grandchildren, Hunter, Hannah, Cade, Levi, Peighton, and Easton; and two great great grandchildren, Asher and Baker.

Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has requested that memorials be directed in her memory to the following:  Spirit of Life Ministries, 235 Chanel Drive, Varnville, South Carolina 29944; or to, Friends of Caroline Hospice, 329 Friends Ln, Ridgeland, South Carolina 29936.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, June 3, 2025, from Spirit of Life Ministries, 235 Chanel Drive, Varnville.  Pastor J. David Schaffer officiating.   Interment will follow in Grimes Cemetery.
