Mrs. Betty Jane Riggs Strickland, 79, of Main Highway, Olar, entered into rest Thursday evening, May 1, 2014, at a Columbia Hospital. She was the wife of fifty years to the late Mr. Joseph E. Strickland, Sr. who died in 2006.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, May 5, 2014, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Ehrhardt. Interment will follow in Strickland Cemetery, Williams.
Born February 20, 1935, a native of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and after marriage resided in Pleasantville, New Jersey prior to making Olar their home in 1981. She was a daughter of the late Frank Samuel Riggs and the late Ruth Brown Riggs Lingo. She was of the United Methodist faith and will be fondly remembered for the love she possessed for her family, always centering her life around her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Surviving are: five sons, Joseph E. Strickland, Jr. of Olar, John Strickland of Manning, Lee Strickland and his wife Thresa of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, David Strickland and his wife Dawn of Manning, and Thomas Strickland and his wife Tracey of Manning; and two daughters, Wanda Lankford and her husband Moe of Lusby, Maryland and Betty Shinaberry of Cope. There are fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren that also survive. She was preceded in death by her brother, William Haigh Riggs; and a sister, Eleanor Mae Korte Bell.
