Betty Martin

June 4, 1945 — July 25, 2011

Biography

Mrs. Betty Jean Martin, 66, of Cross Swamp Road, Lodge, entered into her eternal rest Monday morning, July 25, 2011, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, with her loving family at her side.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o'clock Thursday morning, July 28, 2011, from Peniel Baptist Church, 37 Forks Road, Islandton with The Reverend Terry Hiers and The Reverend Curtis Pettit officiating. Interment will follow in the Churchyard.

Mrs. Martin was born June 4, 1945, in Jasper County, South Carolina and was a daughter of the late Charlie O'Quinn and the late Ruth Dean O'Quinn. Her loving smile and constant helping hand will never be forgotten by the community where she made her humble and loving home, which many outside of her family also called a home away from home. Simply, her place was in the kitchen where her talent and skill were only comparable to the garden that she, along with Ned, cultivated and gave every spare second available to each year. Remembered as more than a mother, grandmother, wonderful southern cook, and housewife - many will always fondly recall the sweet delectable taste of her Red Velvet Cakes and Pecan Pies she perfected and the many quarts of vegetables she canned each year. She was a longtime member of Peniel Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as an assistant clerk beside a dear and treasured friend, the late Mildred Smith.

Surviving are: her husband of fifty years, Mr. James Eddie "Ned" Martin, Sr. of Lodge; four children, Beverly Hardee and her husband Ricky of Lodge, James Eddie "Bubba" Martin and his wife Felecia of Lodge, Penny Hutto and her husband Mike of Walterboro, and Ricky Martin and his wife Virginia of Ruffin; a brother, Carlyle O'Quinn (Pam) of Ridgeland; and five sisters, Doris O. Freeman (Lloyd) of Hampton, Barbara O. Johnson (Olin) of Ridgeland, Mary O. Sauls of Ridgeland, Margaret Thames (Jody) of Early Branch. Known affectionately as, "Mamie" to the loving host of twelve grandchildren she cherished along with the three great grandchildren she admired with her entire heart also survives. She also will remain in the memory of her special "Little Dogs", Spanky and Louise. She was preceded in death by siblings: Edward O'Quinn, Bubba O'Quinn, Diane O'Quinn, Sherry O'Quinn and Charlene O'Quinn.

Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, but in her memory, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be directed to the aid and benefit of children, which always was a soft spot in her heart, The Children's Hospital at The Medical University of South Carolina, 169 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, SC 29425, or donate at www.musckids.com.

The family will be at the residence of Bubba and Felecia Martin, 197 Dozier Drive, Lodge.
