Barbara W. Varn

May 28, 1927 — January 14, 2017

Barbara Wiles Varn, age 89, joined her husband in eternal rest on January 14, 2017 at Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge.

She was the faithfully devoted wife of sixty-five years of Brigadier General (Retired) Jasper Brabham Varn, Jr.  Barbara was born on May 28, 1927 in the Lone Star Community of Orangeburg County.  Lovingly called “Bob,” by her older sisters the late Elberta (Berta) Wiles Moody, and the late Virginia Wiles Carter, she was the youngest of the three daughters of the late Elbert M. Wiles and the late Clara Sands Wiles.

Mrs. Varn graduated from Orangeburg High School in 1942.  She married the love of her life in June of 1951, and loyally supported her husband throughout his forty years of service in the South Carolina National Guard, from Private First Class to Brigadier General.

Barbara’s devotion to her husband and family was infallible, but her devotion to her Lord went much further.   She began her walk with her Lord at Pine Grove Lutheran Church in Lone Star and continued her spiritual journey with her husband at Colston Branch Baptist Church.  She served her Church and her Lord throughout her life.  She ministered to the children of her community as a bible school director and Sunday school teacher at Colston Church.  She was also a member of the Bamberg Lions’ Club, Gideon’s International, and the Lilly Chapter of the Eastern Star.

In her spare time, she enjoyed participating in her Garden Club, Quilting Group, and helping her husband at the Colston voting polls.

She is survived by her son, Jasper B. Varn, III (Jappy) and his wife Jill of Irmo, SC and her daughter, Carla Varn DuPre and husband Paul of Columbia, SC.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jasper B. Varn, IV (Brab) and wife Jillian of Chapin, SC, Shannon Varn Anderson and husband John of Chapin, SC, Brett C. Hammond of Irmo, SC, Madison S. Hammond of Irmo, SC, J. Paul DuPre, III and fiancé Kortney Baker of Lexington, SC and Wiles M. DuPre, Clara M. DuPre and Patrick L. DuPre all of Columbia, SC.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to the following:  Colston Branch Baptist Church, 655 Sunday School Road, Bamberg, South Carolina 29003.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o’clock, Wednesday morning, January 18, 2017 at Colston Branch Baptist Church, 655 Sunday School Road, Bamberg.  Interment will follow at Shady Rest Cemetery in the Colston Community (locate by Google Maps using: McMillan Cemetery, Ehrhardt, SC).
