Barbara Sanderson

Cottageville, South Carolina

Mrs. Barbara Gilreath Sanderson, 84, of Cottageville, entered into eternal rest Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the Veteran’s Victory House in Walterboro. She was the wife of the late Kenneth Sanderson.

Born January 1, 1941, in LaFayette, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Nathan W. Gilreath and Frances Givens Gilreath.  She was the sister of Evelyn G. Craze, Franklin Gilreath and Roger Gilreath.  She graduated from LaFayette High School in 1959. Mrs. Sanderson enlisted in the United States Army in June 1960, having completed her Basic Training in Anniston, Alabama.  She retired from the Unted States Air Force as a Tech Sergeant.  During her military career, her duty stations included Anniston, Alabama; Fort Gordon, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; Bremerhaven, Germany; Orleans, France; and Munich, Germany.  She joined the Department of the Navy and worked in the Transportation of Household Goods for departing Navy personnel.  Barbara served her country proudly for a total of 20 years and 4 days.

Barbara was a member of Cottageville Baptist Church, where she enjoyed helping with anything that she could.  She often held Bible studies in her home.  She enjoyed taking care of children and especially loved drinking her Coca-Cola.

Her family would especially like to thank the staff of Magnolia’s of Walterboro for the love and care they gave Barbara during her stay there, as well as Veteran’s Victory House.

Surviving are: sons, Edward Sanderson and John Sanderson; grandsons, Nicholas and Steven; and several great grandchildren.  Barbara also leaves behind two girls that she loved as her own, Samantha Jones and Tiffany Pearson; and their children, Sydney Stivender, Ally Stivender, Willis Stivender, Keegan Pearson, Gracie Pearson, and Elijah Pearson; two close friends, Vicki Steen and Faye Reeves; as well as many other children that she helped take care of and loved dearly.
