Alton Driggers

September 28, 1928 — May 27, 2014

Mr. Alton Norman Driggers, 85 of Cottageville Highway, Round O, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Betty Jean Dantzler Driggers.

Funeral services will be held 3 pm, Friday, May 30, 2014 at Bedon Baptist Church, 2410 Cottageville Highway, Walterboro. Interment with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Born September 28, 1928 in Walterboro, he was a son of the late Edgar E. Driggers and Ruby Hill Driggers. He attended the public schools of Colleton County, Clemson University and Palmer Business School. He was an active member of Bedon Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Church Trustee, Sunday School Director and was a member of the church choir. He was employed and retired after 30 years of service from Farm Credit Service. He was also a retired farmer and realtor. He was also a member of Bethlehem Masonic Lodge No. 255.

Mr. Driggers dearly loved and faithfully served his country. He served in the South Carolina State Guard, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel; and then served in the South Carolina National Guard, retiring as a Sergeant Major. He was a member of the South Carolina National Guard Association.

Anyone who knew Mr. Alton, knew of the love he had for his family, his country, and his church. He especially loved his horses. He was a charter member and Secretary/Treasurer of the Colleton County Saddle Club and was the Secretary/Treasurer of the South Carolina Quarter Horse Association. He will always be remembered as a true southern gentleman and avid Clemson fan. He enjoyed high school and college football, loved watching his granddaughter play high school and college softball, loved traveling and especially making family vacations to the mountains with his family.

Surviving are: his children, Robert Alton Driggers and his wife Sherry (his favorite daughter-in-law), Edgar E. Driggers, and Nancy Driggers Lyons and her fiancé©, Roy Sparks, Jr., all of Round O; grandchildren, Erin Leigh Driggers, Amber Driggers Gantt and her husband Roger, Calli Brooke Driggers, Alton Walt Driggers, and Richard Lyons; a special friend, Carol Bowick of Ladson; sister-in-law, Linda Dantzler LaMaster and her husband Harley of Florence; many nieces and nephews; and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his first great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edgar Lloyd Driggers and Edgar Mendel Driggers.
