Biography

Alice Lillian Gonyea Johnson McColgan, age 87, of Walterboro entered into her eternal rest at half past seven Sunday evening, September 25, 2011 while in the care of Heritage Health Care in Walterboro, SC after a lengthy illness. She was born on February 1, 1924 in Lake Placid, New York , and was the daughter of Julius and Emily Kennedy Gonyea.

She is survived by her daughters, Beverly Pickreign and Carol DeFuria, both of Saranac Lake, Jessie Jones, of Woodlands, Texas and Mary Beth Miley and her husband Bobby of Walterboro, South Carolina. There are seven grandchildren, Sue Amell (Bryan) of Saranac Lake, Kenneth Pickreign of Tupper Lake, Jeffrey Pickreign of Saranac Lake, Tracy DeFuria-Mauler of Saranac Lake, Michael DeFuria (Holley) of Mechanicville, Adam (Nadia) Jones of Portland, Oregon, and Wesley and Jacob Beach both of Walterboro as well as her great-grandchildren: Chad and Christine Amell, Jonathan Pickreign, Seth Pickreign, Jonathan and Ashley Mauler, Courtney Youngs (Jaydan), and Travis DeFuria also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a former husband, Carl A. Johnson; her son, C. Anthony "Tony" Johnson, Jr.; six brothers: Fabian, Julius, David, Carl, Wesley and Halsey and three sisters: Jesslyn Banker, Marion Shelters, and Viola Watson

She dedicated not only much of her life to the benefit of others thorough her actions, devotions, and prayers, but while in Sunmount, New York, she dedicated her career to children, making her name always remembered by those whom a program she was instrumental in the founding of its existence. She was the retired Director of the New York Foster Grandparent/Senior Companion program at Sunmount where she was devoted even after retirement. She retired in 1984, later moving to Florida before making South Carolina her home in 1991. Before leaving Saranac Lake, Ms. Alice's home church which was the foundation of her steadfast devout faith was member of St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church which she always held close to her heart. At Saint Bernard's Church, she was a member of the Catholic Daughter's as well as the Altar-Rosary Society. She was honored as the 1980 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Queen.

A Mass of Christian burial will be said 10 o'clock Saturday morning, October 1, 2011, from Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church, 925 South Jeffries Blvd, Walterboro. The finial commendation and farewell will follow at Glendale Memorial Chapel Mausoleum prior to Entombment giving her rest near her beloved son, Tony.
