Mr. Albert Carl Reeves, known by all as "Bert", age 40, of 11728 Cottageville Highway, Cottageville, entered into his state of eternal rest Monday afternoon, May 16, 2011, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.
The relatives and friends of the Reeves family are invited to attend the funeral services for Bert Reeves this Friday afternoon, May 20, 2011, at 3 o'clock from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro with The Reverend Jesse Jerkins officiating. Mr. Reeves will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at sunset attended by close family and friends
The family will receive family and friends following the funeral ceremony in the Harbiston Stateroom of the funeral home until 6 o'clock that evening.
Mr. Reeves was born May 12, 1971, in Walterboro, South Carolina and was a son of Mrs. Eugenia Goff Reeves and Mr. Mercer Emile Reeves, Jr. Bert was an entrepreneur being involved in various business endeavors and work relationships during his life; however, the most successful accomplishment of all his work was Carolina Construction Company, of which he was the owner and operator.
Bert enjoyed the political world and began with the Town of Cottageville when being elected to his first term on town council. Following the resignation of The Honorable George Addison as Mayor, he was then elected to complete Mayor Addison's unfinished term in office. He then won reelection and served as Mayor until resigning his office in latter part of 2006.
He was a lifelong member of Cottageville Baptist Church and was a Master Mason holding his membership at Round Lodge, No. 270 - Ancient Free Masons where he was a Past Master. Bert was an avid outdoorsman and angler. His love of the outdoors kept him very conscious of the environment and led him to be personally hands on in the reconstruction of wetlands and animal management to help provide for restoring and managing wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl and big game. He enjoyed hunting game of all kinds, from large game American White Tail deer, wild turkeys, and waterfowl to fishing the local freshwater creeks of Colleton County to the larger scale offshore salt-water fishing. In addition he was constantly involved in planting food plots and sharing stories of his hunts and fishing excursions with others. He was a member of the following organizations: Duck's Unlimited, Inc. - Walterboro Chapter No. 10, National Wild Turkey Federal - Salkehatchie Longbeards Chapter, National Rifle Association, and the South Carolina Waterfowl Association.
Surviving are: his mother, Mrs. Eugenia Goff Reeves of Cottageville; a daughter, Abigail Ruth Reeves of Florence; a son, Ross Morgan Reeves of Florence; a brother, Chip Reeves and his wife Amanda of Enoree; and a sister, Allison Reeves Smith of and her husband Karl of Alpharetta, Georgia. There is an uncle, Carl Goff and his wife Rebecca of Sarasota, Florida; an aunt, The Honorable Margaret Reeves Steen and her husband Jim of Cottageville; as well as three nephews and one niece that also survive.
