Stephanie Kearse

Stephanie Ann Kearse, 59, of Arlington, Virginia, entered into rest Friday afternoon, September 15, 2017, at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She is survived by her son, Zachary Kearse.

Funeral services will be held 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, September 20, 2017, at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Varnville.  Interment will follow in Harmony Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Crocketville.  An additional memorial service will be held at a later date in Arlington, Virginia.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1 o’clock, Wednesday until the hour of service.

Stephanie was born on June 20, 1958, to Fontaine and G. Warren Kearse, then of Alexandria, Va. She grew up mostly in Butler, Pa., and graduated from Butler High School in 1976. She attended Georgetown University, before withdrawing to travel to the Bahamas.

As a young adult in San Francisco, she worked at a record store and clubs including the historic music venue The Old Waldorf. In the mid-'80s she lived in Australia with a community connected to counterculture figure Owsley Stanley. There she swam with platypuses and survived a throw from a wild horse. In 1986, she moved to Arlington. Under the guidance of Dr. Jing Nuan Wu, she became a licensed massage therapist, and she worked at the Georgetown University Center for Intercultural Education and Development.

Over the past decade, she worked for Arlington Public Schools as a library assistant and special education assistant. After buying her house on Carlin Springs Road, she joined Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed cooking healthy foods and spending time in nature.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, James Thompson “Tom” Kearse.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.
