Mrs. Myrtle Spires Gibson, 89, of Walterboro Highway near Varnville, entered into rest Thursday morning, June 7, 2018, at the Effingham Extended Care Center in Springfield, Georgia. She was the wife of the late Mr. Roy Newton Gibson who passed away in 1993.
Born July 27, 1928, in Bulloch County, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lonnie Spires and the late Geneva Sharpe Spires. She was a devoted homemaker to her family. She was a member of the Rice Patch Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Islandton. At her church, she was a Sunday School teacher for over fifty years and was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She loved and enjoyed flowers, painting, and was truly a great southern cook. She enjoyed songwriting, and in her earlier years, composed, “He Took My Hands”, which was recorded by The Beacons.
She was preceded in death by her children, Sherry Gibson Polk and Ronnie Newton Gibson.
Surviving are: her grandchildren, Cindy Gibson Robinson and her husband Kevin of Rincon, Georgia, Kipp Polk of Islandton, Rodney Allen Gibson and his wife Debora of Clyo, Georgia, and Gabriel Polk and his wife Raven of Cummings; and well as five great grandchildren; and a son-in-law, C. Carroll Polk of Islandton. There is a sister that also survives, Margie Spires Maxwell of Bryson City, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: Rice Patch Christian Church Building Fund, care of Mr. Lavern Polk, 1865 Ashton Road, Islandton, South Carolina 29929.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, June 10, 2018, from Rice Patch Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 15246 Sniders Highway, Islandton. The Reverend Larry D. Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Hampton Cemetery, Holly Street East in Hampton.
