Lamar Godley Obituary

Mr. David Lamar Godley, 73, of Moselle Road, Islandton, entered into rest Friday morning, June 29, 2018, at his home. 

 

Born January 20, 1945, in Colleton County, he was the son of the late Edward Kenneth Godley and the late Helena Kinard Godley.  He served his country faithfully in the United States Air Force, having served in Vietnam and received the Quilt of Valor.  He was also a retired generator mechanic from the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort.  Lamar was a lifelong farmer.  He continued the tradition and business started by his father, Kenneth Godley and Son Farms in Islandton.  He was named Young Farmer of the Year for Farm Bureau of Colleton County, and was a former member of the Board of Directors for Farm Bureau.  He was also a member of the Beaufort Marine Water Search and Rescue Squad. 

 

Lamar was a member of Adnah United Methodist Church, where he was currently serving as a Trustee and was former chairman of the Board of Trustees.  He was a lifetime member of Hudson Masonic Lodge No. 373 – Ancient Free Masons in Islandton, where he was a Past Master.  He was an avid fisherman and loved hunting.  Most of all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, who will always be remembered for the love and dedication he had for his family.

 

Surviving are: his wife of 53 years, Mrs. Gloria Gibson Godley; a daughter, Donna Godley Coxwell and her husband Reverend Michael Coxwell of Beaufort; a son, Jeff Godley and his wife Stacey Godley of Islandton; and a sister, Nancy Godley Peeler of Islandton, and her children, Jason Peeler of Islandton, and Emily Peeler Welch and her husband Brad, and their children, Elizabeth and Harper. There are six grandchildren, Courtney Elizabeth Coxwell, Caroline Frances Coxwell, Catherine Grace Coxwell, Matthew Kendall Light, Kenneth Loyd Godley, and Kennedy Faith Godley; as a well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.  He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janice Marie Godley; a sister, Judith Kay Godley; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Peeler.

 

Flowers will be accepted, or for those who wish, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions may be directed in his memory to: Adnah United Methodist Church, Cemetery Fund, care of Cathy Williams, 5853 Lowcountry Highway, Yemassee, South Carolina 29945.

 

Funeral services will be conducted 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, July 2, 2018, from the Adnah United Methodist Church, Adnah Church Road, Islandton.  The Reverend Jim Hensley officiating, assisted by The Reverend Michael Coxwell.  Interment with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will follow on the family plot in the churchyard.
