Mrs. Ione Ugland Hiers, age 97, of Walterboro, entered into rest early Wednesday morning, August 16, 2017, at the Oakbrook Health Care Center in Summerville. She was the wife of the late Mr. Harry Brantley Hiers.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Saturday morning, August 19, 2017, from Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church, 106 May Street, Walterboro. The Reverend Rich Johnston officiating. Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery, South Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro.
Born April 4, 1920, in Kenyon, Minnesota, she was a daughter of the late Johannas Lars Ugland and the late Helen Friese Ugland. In her earlier years in Walterboro, she was a Medical Technician at the former Esdorn Hospital. Following that, she along with her husband founded and operated the iconic Hiers Drive In Grill in Walterboro for over fifty years. Outside of her family, her work was her life. They also had great dedication to Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Walterboro, a church that the Hiers family was one of the charter members and where she was also the oldest member. For many years, they also operated the local fair. She was loved by her family and was always there for those she loved.
Surviving are: two daughters, Loray Hiers Evans of Bluffton and Ilona Hiers Strickland and her husband James of Walterboro; five grandchildren, Brantley Arden Strickland of Florence, Jaymie Strickland of Walterboro, Helana Strickland Westbury of Walterboro, Lorrae Evans of Bluffton, and Devan Evans of Virginia; and five great grandchildren, Tyler Westbury, Braeden Westbury, Madison Strickland, Hagan Strickland, and Graycie Strickland. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Tommy Evans; and her brother, Lorrie Hilton Ugland.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church, 106 May Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
