Mr. Grady Matthew Varn, Sr., known to many as “Grits”, 74, of Walterboro, entered into rest Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at his residence.
Born September 27, 1944 in Walterboro, he was a son of the late Willie Lee Varn and Daisy DeWitt Varn Jones. He served his country in the South Carolina Army National Guard. He retired as a manager of Food Lion after thirty years of service having worked at many of their stores throughout the Southeast. During his career he had also worked at Piggly Wiggly, Doschers and Winn Dixie. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed wood crafting. He enjoyed drag racing with his sons and grandsons, always supporting Varn Motor Sports and was the greatest fan of horsepower.
Surviving are: his wife of 55 years, Shirley Ann Barnes Varn of Walterboro; children, Matt Varn and his wife Tammy of Round O, Rodney Varn of Walterboro, and Stacey Varn Williams and her husband Joey of Walterboro; grandchildren, Jay McCollum, Josh McCollum, Kyle McCollum, Heather Varn, Haley Varn, Shane Varn, Taylor Varn, Hunter Williams, and Kaylee Williams; and great grandchildren, Emalynn and Jaxson. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Ruth Anne Lyons Varn; and a brother, Elmer Varn.
Funeral services will be held 11 o’clock, Saturday morning, October 13, 2018 at The Brice Herndon Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery, Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro.
