Bill Martin

Mr. William Lowell Martin, 67, entered into rest Saturday, August 31, 2019, surrounded by his loving family in his home in Walterboro, while under the care of Compass Hospice.

Born April 29, 1952, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was a son of the late William Martin and the late Grace Peters.  He served our country faithfully in the United States Marine Corps and it was while he was stationed at Parris Island that he made South Carolina his home.   Mr. Martin dedicated his life to a long and distinguished career in fire service.   He has served as a Captain for the Hilton Head Fire Department, a Chief for The City of Hardeeville Fire Department and Assistant Chief for the Bluffton Township Fire District, prior to his tenure and retirement as the Fire Marshall in Bluffton.  He was a member of the South Carolina Fireman’s Association, Gold Miners Association, and the National Rife Association.  Bill was a friend to all, never meeting a stranger.  He was an avid junk collector, being known by some as a modern day “Sanford and Son”.  His greatest passion in life was providing for his family and taking care of others.  Among his pastimes was also fishing and being the “Neighborhood Mayor”.

Surviving are: his wife of forty-eight years, Mrs. Susan Sanders Martin; two children, Kathy Martin Humbert and her husband Cecil of Tillman and William A. “Billy” Martin and his wife Amanda of Walterboro; a brother, Terry Martin; and four sisters, Kathy Bunch, Cindy Sullivan, Una Aulby, and Beverly Martin.  He is also survived by three grandchildren, Katelyn Martin, Michael Humbert and his wife Courtney, and Preston Humbert; his faithful sidekick, “Scrappy”, and  two sisters-in-law, Janette Perry and her husband Bruce and Judy Mack and her husband Charles; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: Jasper Animal Rescue Mission, 1352 Carters Mill Road, Ridgeland, South Carolina 29936.

A memorial celebration of his life will be conducted at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, September 10, 2019, from Family Harvest Ministries, 7202 W Main Street, Ridgeland.  The Reverend Darren Davis officiating.  The family will receive friends following the funeral ceremony at the church.
